The National Curriculum aims at mastery curriculum; that is, pupils have goals (attainment targets) to be met by the end of a key stage. We expect that pupils will be consistently exposed to the content as mapped across the key stages and gradually deepen their understanding. ‘Mastery’ is, therefore, not a style of teaching or a standard to meet. It is a concept of steady deepening of understanding. The aim is not to ‘achieve’ learning in a lesson as if it is an ultimate destination. Instead, pupils should have numerous opportunities to return to content, over time, to gain a growing developmental understanding. Hence, scaffolding and cycling the scheme has become part of our school culture.
